Patrick Chappatte: The power of cartoons

Summary
Patrick Chappatte, a political cartoonist, talks about the influence of the Internet, cartoons which can be used as weapons, and cartoonists’ role to deal with this problem. First of all, he says the Internet has changed the world. As the Internet diffuses all over the world, we are connected. Also, all the information is shared, and the Internet changes our lifestyle. Next, he mentions cartoons can be used as weapons. For example, the cartoons drawn by Danish cartoonists were used by a Danish newspaper, extremists, and politicians. As a result, people died in demonstrations and violence. Another example is the cartoon used by the Nazis to attack the Jews. Today, conflicts between civilizations are occurring because of religions and the fighting of freedom of speech, and cartoons are sandwiched between them. Thus, he suggests a positive method that cartoonists can do by saying about the works that were performed in three countries. In Ivory Coast, he made a book looking back 13 years of political crisis in the country with the cartoonists from all sides. With Lebanese cartoonists, he treated the issues that influenced Lebanon, like politics, religions, and daily lives, and the cartoons were together on all kinds of newspapers. Moreover, he and Kenyan cartoonists dealt with the problem of ethnicity in Kenya and made video clips. All of them were successful, and cartoons were used as a wonderful tool of communication. In conclusion, he says we should help cartoonists choose not to draw cartoons that will incite hatred.

Response
While watching this video, I was laughing most of the time. In my opinion, he is not a skilled conversationalist, but he with his cartoons is more than one. His cartoons have a great sense of humour. Three of them are particularly impressive for me. The first thing is about music industry. As a woman says “the Internet has changed music”, a man replies “we had to go to the store to steal it before.” I feel that it is satirizing rampant internet piracy. Another thing is about free Wi-Fi. Even though free Wi-Fi liberates a man from his office, he is wearing handcuffs and shackles with his laptop. Looking at the picture, I think that ‘Yes, this is the thing I thought about.’ The last thing is that he is thinking about the meaning of his life. Then, his wife says “Try Google.” I feel very bitter because I think that this is another picture of our society today. On the other hand, from the video clip “ReDrawing Kenya,” I notice that cartoons can awakened people to the problems of a society and make a deep impression on their mind. Thus, it seems to be really important what kind of cartoon a cartoonist draws.

I agree with you, HyeaJin. I like this video, it’s very interesting. Watching cartoons are now the easiest and most favorite way of entertainment for most of the children. Children are naturally attracted by the simple plot animation and the vivid images. It can enrich children’s knowledge of animation and mold their aesthetic sentiment. Also the cartoons can teach young children the truth in life, but there are still some lower quality animations that will give a negative impact on children. Practice has proved that we have a reasonable guide for young children, which will make a real benefit from the animated children's physical and mental health. With a wide variety of animated films, we need to select and guide carefully for children. A good cartoon, which we use to foster children’s cheerful personality, sense of humor and sense of justice, is now truly become the children's cartoon "good partners.

This video is humorous. The way he illustrates that cartoon can be a powerful weapon for peace is funny and easy to observe.Nowadays, the conflicts between people, or religions, are rising days by days. Therefore, cartoon is a communicating tools for people to send out their messages.Cartoon can carry the ideas, the opinion of the drawers and it can cross boundaries. The humor in cartoon usually more attracts people attention and the idea the artist wants to emphasize will be easily observed by other people. There are also some cartoons carrying negative meanings, which are used to criticize and insult to other people or religions in a disgusting way. However, that's not the fault of cartoon. It will be good or bad depend on the users.Let's keep the cartoons making us laugh and provide interesting lessons in a positive and humorous way.
